Calle San Francisco (Calle de las Setas), also called the mushroom street, is a must see if you like fairy tales. This lovely decorated street not only inspires kids but locals and tourists of all ages. It is hard to imagine that until 2013 illegal traders were located there, and it was rather an area that one would not like to visit. An initiative of the city of Alicante turned the pedestrian street into a kind of fantasy world. With large colourful mushroom figures, bugs, ants and snails. Children love playing around the decorations. Cafés and small independent shops invite to spend more time.
The street connects the two squares Plaza de la Puerta de San Francisco and Plaza Portal de Elche. The latter is also a wonderful place for having a break - among the shades of the big trees on the square.
