In the eastern part of the Hochsauerland district, on the border to Hessen, the nature conservation area "Neuer Hagen", also known as "Niedersfelder Hochheide", is located at an altitude of more than 800 meters.
Mountain heaths are habitats for specialists among animals and plants. These include the slow-growing dwarf shrubs that dominate the drought-poor landscape: heather, blueberry and cranberry, as well as the rare crowberry and raspberry. In summer, you can also see on the high heath also known as medicinal plant Arnica, whose golden yellow flowers glow in the sun.
In the area you have a good chance to spot a predatory shrike on the spruce tips or to hear the call of the cuckoo, which has become rare in many places. A special sight is also the large herd with Heidschnucken and goats, which pulls once a year through the area, in order to carry out the necessary "maintenance".
"Der Goldene Pfad" is only one of many hiking routes on the Hochheide, you can find all the info on the mountain.
For example, walk to Willingen over the mountaintop.
Drive up as far as possible, otherwise you will have to hike another kilometer up the hill.
Definitely make a stop at the Hochheide Hutte for some of grandma's cake!
