Vietnam, officially the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, is located on the Indochina Peninsula. While Hanoi is the capital, Ho Chin Minh City (Saigon) is the most populous city. In recent days, Vietnam is often known for its Vietnam War (1965-73), but it has a long and rich (dynastic) history. In the late 19th and early 20th century, Vietnam was entirely under French regime. The country is densely forested (42% of the land area) and mountains cover about 40% of the land area. The country has a diverse flora and fauna, with about 16000 species of flora. Tourism has recently evolved as a major economic component.
